PRODUCT DETAILS
FT-6160 Epoxy Primer: High-performance epoxy primer engineered to maximize adhesion to properly prepared concrete and steel substrates, offering excellent moisture resistance.
FT-2216 Polyurea: Fast-setting, rapid-curing, two-component aromatic polyurea designed for general-purpose protection. The system provides high flexibility, abrasion resistance, and impact resistance.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The objective of this project was to waterproof wood and concrete substrates at an iconic beachfront hotel in Laguna Beach, CA.
The installation of the polyurea coating system was designed to prevent water infiltration, protect the structural elements, and extend the service life of the building while minimizing future maintenance requirements.

SURFACE PREPARATION
All substrates underwent a comprehensive surface preparation process to ensure optimal adhesion and long-term coating performance.

Preparation activities included:
– Abrasive blasting with steel shot to remove contaminants, laitance, and weak surface layers.
– Thorough cleaning and vacuuming to eliminate dust and residual particles.
– Surface inspection to confirm compliance with cleanliness and surface profile requirements prior to primer application.

This process ensured ideal substrate conditions for maximum bonding strength and coating durability.

PRIMER APPLICATION
Following surface preparation, the concrete surfaces were primed using FT-6160 Epoxy Primer.

Key aspects of primer application included:
– Uniform application to achieve complete coverage and consistent film thickness.
– Selection of FT-6160 for its excellent adhesion properties and moisture resistance, providing a reliable base for the polyurea system.
– Enhanced curing control measures due to high ambient humidity, ensuring proper film formation and performance.

Challenge: The concrete roof of the parking structure needed to be waterproofed but would not be put into service for a period of approximately 2 years, leaving it exposed to robust construction traffic and weather conditions. Only a Polyurea could withstand the continual use as a lay-down area and exposed to the elements without catastrophic damage.
