Project description: Westfield is doing a $750 million expansion on their Topanga Canyon mall. One part of the expansion includes building an underground tunnel from a main road under shopping area to a parking structure. Freedom worked closely with Westfield to design and spec a waterproofing system that would last and speed up the construction of the project.
Application: Westfield had a tunnel they need to move cars from a busy street under the mall to a parking garage. The total surface are of the tunnel was 50,000 +. They were going to be pouring in sections and needed to be able to apply a waterproofing system on some areas in less than 28 days of the pour. For these areas that were older than 7 days of cure but less than 28 days of cure we used 16 mils of FT-6600 MVR. After the primer was applied a total of 120 mils of FT-2202 polyurea was applied. A “belt & suspenders” approach was used so drain board was hung on top of the polyurea to help move the water away from the walls and ceiling.
Results: The polyurea system was chosen due to its durability, seamless application, fast turnaround time, and extremely low permeability rating. The owner Westfield was able to hand the drain board the same day the polyurea was sprayed and back fill the areas the next day. This helped speed up the construction path by several weeks saving money on the construction cost.
